Mentor Equipping for Churches

What would it look like to have a thriving mentoring ministry in your church? To have the multiplying ministry of one-to-one discipleship happening throughout your ministries and church body? What if you could upskill your church members so that they could be part of this?

Roots

The roots of the MEQ for Churches course are in the MEQ Certificate1 and Graduate Certificate2 courses which are taught around the country3, and were established by Tim Dyer through JohnMark Ministries.4 MEQ for Churches distils some of the key content from the MEQ Certificate and Graduate Certificate courses, and reappropriates it for a local church ministry context.

Purpose

Mentor-Equipping (MEQ) for Churches provides the environment for thoughtful Christians to reflect on their experience and to develop skills to intentionally build into the lives of others. The training is specifically designed for church members who would like to grow in their skills and understanding of mentoring for use in their church context. The goal is to equip church members to mentor other church members with tools, resources and confidence to allow God to work through them in others’ lives through one-to-one ministry.

Content

The training provides an opportunity to:

  • develop a set of interpersonal relationship skills for effective mentoring,
  • consider the biblical basis for mentoring,
  • learn and apply strategies for use in the mentoring process
  • gain an understanding of where mentoring fits with other support models (such as discipleship, pastoral care and counselling).

The course is made up of 3 workshops, each 5 hours long and roughly a month apart. The training provides an opportunity to do some personal reflection through action-reflection exercises between sessions and to start mentoring to apply what they are learning.
